It used to be the case that posting a letter simply involved putting a stamp on an envelope before popping it into the postbox. If you were sending a slightly heavier than normal letter you would take it to the post office, have it weighed and then decide whether you wanted it to be sent via first or second class.

Postage Rates UK 2012
However, as from the 21st August 2006, the introduction of new postage rates UK customers had to adhere to made the process more complicated. Letters are now divided into three different categories: letter, large letter and packet and the two factors that determine the category are weight and size (including thickness).
Royal Mail UK
Under these new postage rates UK letters must weigh no more than 100g, be less than 5mm thick and be no bigger than 240mm x 165mm. This means that if you are sending an A4 letter you can simply fold it once to fit in an envelope before sending. Sending a letter this size via first class postage will cost 60p. To send second class it will cost 50p.
Post Office UK
The maximum weight of a large letter is 750g. It must be less than 25mm in thickness and have dimensions of no more than 353mm x 250mm, which will comfortably fit an A4 document without the need to fold it. Postage rates UK customers have to pay for this size letter are fixed at 90p for first class and 69p for second class.
A packet is any item that weighs up to 1kg. Postage prices depend upon the weight and dimensions of the parcel, so you'll need to take these to be weighed and measured at your local post office.
There are also services similar to track and trace that are available at an extra cost. For instance, you can send a letter that requires a signature upon receipt at the other end, or for extra security, you can send via special delivery, which is insured up to £500 and guaranteed to be delivered on the next working day.
