The tracking service provided by the Royal Mail is for important or valuable items send through the postal system and allows the checking of the progress and status of items sent within the UK or abroad. It is recommended for urgent post or items with a value of over £2,500 and requires a signature on delivery. The online Royal Mail Tracking service requires the input of a unique tracking number and can be checked by either the sender or recipient so long as they know the number.

The feature is called Track & Trace and applies to post sent via Special Delivery or through Royal Mail Tracked. Airsure is the tracking service for mail sent abroad and there is also an International Signed For together with a Recorded Signed For service within the UK.
Royalmail Status
Royal Mail Tracking is primarily based on the ability to interrogate the status of postal items online. Each item sent via Royal Mail in this way is allocated a unique reference number, which is then input into a search field on the Royal Mail's website. The reference number is 13 characters long beginning with two letters followed by nine digits and ending with GB. A dedicated helpline operated by the Royal Mail is available for those experiencing difficulties with their reference number not being recognised.
Royalmail Shipping
The search will tell you the status of your parcel and will confirm delivery if delivery has already taken place. Another feature offered on the website is that of Electronic Proof of Delivery. This proof of delivery is a snapshot taken of the card on which a signature is written when the item is delivered. A scanned image of the signature is electronically scanned and converted into a digital image. The information provides details of who accepted the delivery and when delivery was made.
