Samaritans cheque handover

Round the clock, every single day of the year, Samaritans volunteers support people who are struggling to cope. Samaritans are there for everyone. Their callers are ordinary people going through extraordinary circumstances, including bereavement, debt and personal tragedy. 80% of people they speak to are simply struggling to cope with what life has thrown at them. They listen, in confidence and without judgement.

Samaritans has 201 branches across the UK & ROI run by 20,980 volunteers who empower people to turn their lives around every day, but they don't just wait for people to get in touch with them – they go out in to local communities as well.

Ten times a minute we help someone turn their life around

Since the recession hit, the demand for Samaritans has increased dramatically. They had 147,000 additional calls from people in distress last year and every call costs them £3.83 to answer. They receive almost no Government funding. As a charity, it is the kind donations of the public that keep them open and with over 5 million people contacting them last year, they NEED to be there.

“It sounds overly dramatic saying that a phone call saved your life doesn’t it? But it did” - Samaritans caller
