Bangladesh means Bengal Nation and between June to September suffers greatly from heavy rains and cyclones during the wet monsoon. Bangladesh has in the past been ravished by cyclones. In 2007 Cyclone Sidr hit the Bay of Bengal in the south west of the country and resulted in international aid being sent. Originally part of Pakistan, Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries in the world. In 1971 it found independence and, no longer known as East Pakistan, became Bangladesh. There are many national parks and conservation areas in existence in Bangladesh. Bhawal National Park is only one hour from Dhaka and offers boating, walking and angling. It even hosts a Silent Zone where music cannot be played, where peacocks roam and deer graze. Lowacherra National Park, known locally as Shaymoli, is a large tropical forest.
